The Spanish Film Festival was a film festival where the Spanish instructor played three movies and we had to choose one film to watch. Each film was related to the Hispanic culture in some way. I chose to watch the film, Selena which is a biographical drama. It’s about a famous singer named Selena Quintanilla, who was born to a musical Mexican-American family in Texas. Her father realizes that her daughter Selena is talented and he starts up a band called Selena and Los Dinos. While living the life of a performer and going from one place to another performing, she meets a guitarist and falls in love. Her father does not accept this because he thinks it will affect the whole band, so Selena has to struggle with juggling her love life and her family. There were some interesting things the film that enjoyed. I admire the symbolism that was shown at certain points of the film. For example, there is a scene where Selena and her siblings are at an amusement park. At the amusement park, Selena goes on a buggy jump and she decided to go on it symbolizes her deciding to marry her love. Jumping of symbolizes her facing her fear of marrying him. The last scene of the movie starts off with Selene singing and then a flower falls out of nowhere in front of her. This symbolizes her not seeing her death coming and it ends with the real pictures and footage of the crime scene. It ends with people outstand with candles and posters, mourning her death. It shows real pictures of her and videos of her actual performance, ending with her mom saying goodbye at the end. The ending was done well because it shows us real pictures and footage of her and her performances. The movie was done well, but the ending was emotional.
